On Wednesday, June 12, Democracy Day, protests against hunger and the economic hardships the Bola Tinubu administration has inflicted on Nigerians have broken out in several sections of Lagos State.
At Ikeja Underbridge, demonstrators were heard singing patriotic songs and holding signs and banners with many statements criticizing the government, the nation’s economic woes, and the repeal of punitive measures.
The demonstrators held signs that said, among other things, “President Tinubu, let the poor breathe;” “For another general strike with mass protest now;” and “Payment of living wage to all Nigerian workers now.”
Protesters from many organizations, including the Socialist Workers League, Coalition for Revolution, Education Rights Campaign, and Take It Back Movement, are noteworthy. Officers from the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police Force were stationed at the protest site to maintain law and order, even though there had not been any reports of violence there at the time this report was written.
Protesters were earlier issued a warning by the police and State Security Services that violence, property destruction, and interference with the freedom of other residents to move about their city would not be allowed.
